The Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization meet in Bishkek to discuss strengthening regional security

On June 5, Bishkek hosted a meeting of the Ministers of Internal Affairs and Public Security of the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
The event was attended by delegations from the ministries of internal affairs and public security of the SCO member states, as well as representatives of the Organization’s permanent bodies, the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), and the Bureau for the Coordination of the Fight against Organized Crime and Other Dangerous Types of Crime in the Territory of the CIS.
At the event, Sadyr Japarov, President of the Kyrgyz Republic, received the heads of delegations.
As part of the meeting, participants highlighted the growing importance of the SCO as a trusted platform for dialogue and cooperation at a time when the international environment is undergoing significant transformations and global security challenges continue to evolve.
The discussions focused on a wide range of pressing regional and international security issues. Participants discussed contemporary threats and challenges, including those arising from the rapid advancement of digital technologies and the complexity of cyber risks.
As part of the meeting, the ministers highlighted the importance of enhancing information security and coordinating efforts to counter threats in cyberspace. A high level of international cooperation remains essential for addressing modern security challenges and ensuring regional stability.
A special emphasis was placed on combating transnational crime and improving joint mechanisms for responding to emerging threats. For the purpose of enhancing regional security, participants discussed practical measures aimed at strengthening the cooperation among law enforcement agencies.
Additionally, the agenda included issues related to the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances, and their precursors. In this regard, delegates stressed the need to intensify efforts against the production and distribution of synthetic drugs, as well as to further strengthen information exchange and operational cooperation.
Cybercrime prevention was another key topic of discussion. During the discussion, participants discussed opportunities for expanding practical cooperation in developing effective responses to crimes committed using information technology, including challenges associated with the misuse of artificial intelligence.
The meeting concluded with the signing of a protocol reflecting on the agreements reached and outlining measures for their practical implementation.
The outcomes of the meeting reaffirmed the commitment of SCO member states to strengthening cooperation in the field of security and law enforcement, while contributing to the preservation of peace, stability, and sustainable development throughout the region.
