Uzbekistan inherited from the previous regime an ecological crisis associated with the drying up of the Aral Sea, industries that negatively impact public health and the environment, and depleted water and land resources. Environmental problems in Uzbekistan by the end of the 1980s had become so acute that in April 1988, by a special decision of the government of the republic, a state body was created to monitor the state and protection of the environment - the state Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for nature protection with territorial divisions of the committee in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, regions (districts) of the republic, and also in the city of Tashkent. |

In order to radically improve public administration in the field of environmental safety and environmental protection in the republic, improve the environmental situation, prevent the harmful effects of waste on the environment and public health, create favorable conditions for improving the standard and quality of life of the population, further improve the waste management system, as well as in pursuance of the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On improving the system of public administration in the field of ecology and environmental protection" DP-5024 dated April 21, 2017 and the Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On measures to ensure the organization of activities of the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection" RP-2915 dated April 21, 2017, the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Nature Protection was transformed into the state Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on ecology and environmental protection. |

The State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection (hereinafter referred to as the State Committee on Ecology) is a state administration body in the field of ecology, environmental protection, rational use and reproduction of natural resources and is accountable in its activities to the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In addition, the Committee of the Republic of Karakalpakstan on Ecology and Environmental Protection, as well as territorial departments for ecology and environmental protection in the regions and the city of Tashkent have been established within the system of the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection. |
| 4 | Under the Committee of the Republic of Karakalpakstan on Ecology and Environmental Protection, the departments of ecology and environmental protection of the regions, state unitary enterprises "Toza Hudud" were created with branches in cities, as well as in the regions of the republic on the basis of sections for the provision of services for the removal of household waste of the improvement departments under the district khokimiyats. |
| 5 | According to the Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On priority organizational measures for the effective establishment of the activities of the republican executive bodies" DP-14 dated January 25, 2023, on the basis of the State Committee on Ecology and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the former Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Ministry of Ecology) was reorganized into the system of the Cabinet of Ministers. |
| 6 | Also, on the basis of the Hydrometeorological Service Center under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Hydrometeorological Service Agency under the Ministry of Ecology of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the State Forestry Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan were reorganized into the Forestry Agency. The Agency was transferred to the Ministry of Ecology. Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On measures for the effective organization of public administration in the field of culture and tourism within the framework of administrative reform" DP-114 dated July 27, 2023 and the Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On measures to further accelerate reforms and effectively organize the public administration system in the field of tourism" RP-238 dated July 27, 2023, according to the decision, the Tourism Committee was created under the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Ecology on the basis of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. |
