The Head of State emphasized that holding such a prestigious forum outside UNESCO Headquarters — for the first time in the past 40 years — in the ancient and eternally young city of Samarkand vividly reflects the high level of trust of UNESCO Member States in the large-scale and dynamic reforms being implemented in New Uzbekistan.
In his speech, the President noted that effective joint action against the climate crisis is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. He underscored that the noticeable rise in average temperatures, melting glaciers, desertification, soil erosion, and urbanization processes are having a serious impact on the condition of cultural heritage sites.
“We propose launching the global initiative ‘UNESCO Ecological Capital’ to recognize and encourage cities that demonstrate environmental responsibility and successfully implement ‘green’ programs. In addition, we support the development of a draft resolution of the UNESCO Executive Board titled "Strengthening Measures to Safeguard Cultural Heritage amid Globalization and Climate Change." We are ready to host an international symposium on this issue in the city of Khiva,” Shavkat Mirziyoyev stated.
Furthermore, the Head of State put forward important initiatives aimed at promoting inclusive education and the broad application of artificial intelligence technologies in the field; preserving the world’s intangible cultural heritage; ensuring women’s leadership and competencies; taking joint and effective measures to counter the spread of misinformation, manipulation of public opinion, and discrimination in the virtual space; as well as promoting universal values such as tolerance, mutual understanding and harmony amid growing interreligious tensions around the world.
The President expressed confidence that the Samarkand session would become a major practical step towards defining new areas of cooperation, strengthening mutual trust, and enhancing global partnership mechanisms for sustainable development.
