This event was initiated by BirdLife International. It was first launched in 1993 under the name World Birdwatch and today unites hundreds of thousands of participants across the globe. It is usually held at the end of the first week of October.
In Uzbekistan as well, the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, together with partner organizations, holds various campaigns every year aimed at protecting birds. Among them are activities such as Helping Birds in Winter, the eco-campaign Birds Are Our Friends, International Bird Feeding Day, and others.
To date, a total of 487 bird species inhabit the republic, of which 52 species are listed in the Red Book, meaning they are considered rare. Among them:
- 86 species — resident,
- 122 species — nesting and migratory,
- 63 species — exclusively migratory,
- 80 species — migratory and wintering,
- 16 species — wintering,
- 54 species — nesting, migratory, and wintering,
- 55 species — vagrant (accidentally occurring).
In total, 320 bird species participate in migrations.
The main goal is to study bird diversity through observation, draw attention to the need to protect their habitats, and involve the public in solving environmental issues. Birds play an important role in preserving biodiversity — their numbers and species richness ensure ecological stability. Therefore, birdwatching and bird protection are of great importance for global environmental monitoring.
