Public Opinion Studied on the Project to Provide Drinking Water to the Population

At the hearing, representatives from the Ecology Departments of Turtkul, Kungrad, and Muynak districts, the Karakalpakstan Republic branch of the State Environmental Expertise Center, the Karakalpakstan Republic “Suvta’minot” JSC and its district branches, the Muynak district water supply department, local residents, heads of mahalla (neighborhood) committees, the company responsible for the project “Nazar Business and Technology” LLC, and media representatives participated.
This project is being implemented jointly with the Asian Development Bank. According to the project, 97 km of water supply networks will be constructed in the Kungrad and Muynak districts. Water will be supplied through main trunk pipes with a diameter of 500 mm, and a system will be created to distribute up to 250,000 cubic meters of water per day.
In addition, the project includes the reconstruction of the water intake point from the Pakhta-Arna canal and the modernization of the Tuyamuyun treatment facilities, which will be able to purify up to 140,000 cubic meters of water per day.
At the public hearings, it was especially noted that the project complies with international requirements for environmental and social impact assessments. Specifically, concrete measures have been defined to reduce the likelihood of air, water, and soil pollution, as well as to lower noise levels during construction. It was emphasized that technologies to reduce dust formation will be used, controlled waste collection and disposal will be ensured, and noise reduction methods will be applied. Opinions and suggestions from the public were also heard.
For information: the project is implemented in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. 257 dated May 24, 2022, the Law “On Nature Protection,” the Law “On Water and Water Use,” as well as the criteria established by the environmental and social policies of the Asian Development Bank.
The project aims to provide the population with quality drinking water, modernize water supply networks, improve sanitary and health indicators, and reduce environmental risks in the region.
