The reserve received a report about an injured bird found near the A-380 highway. The staff rushed to the site, transported the pelican to the reserve and administered first veterinary aid.
Upon examination, it was determined that the pelican’s left wing was damaged. Since the bird would be unable to fly if returned to the wild, it was transferred to the Nukus Zoo for further care. At present, the pelican remains under constant observation.
For reference: the pink pelican is a vulnerable and declining species listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan and the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It nests in the Southern Aral Sea region and is encountered during migration in the basins of the Amu Darya, Zarafshan and Syrdarya rivers, occasionally wintering there. Migration occurs in March–April and September–November. Its primary diet consists of fish.
