The Tien Shan brown bear is classified as a vulnerable species with a wide but fragmented range. It is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan and in Appendix I of CITES. The species is most active from March to October, mainly in the mornings and evenings and hibernates in winter. The mating season occurs in May–June and females give birth once every two years. Bears reach sexual maturity at the age of 3–4 years. Their diet consists of berries, roots, and occasionally mammals, insects and carrion. The species’ lifespan can reach up to 30 years.
Background: The "Yukori-Tupalang" National Nature Park is located on the southwestern slopes of the Gissar Range, spanning elevations from 930 to 3,700 meters above sea level. Its highest point is Mount Khodjaikuyikolon (3,700 m). The park is rich in mineral springs, among the largest of which are Zevarsay, Chakalsay, Baganikatsay, Sesangasay, Sagdorsay, Simchosay, Zanbeksay, Khuchisay, Dilisay, Tamarhudsoy and Chashmaikhunikuksay.
The park is home to about 100 species of vertebrates: more than 10 species of mammals, around 20 species of birds, over 10 species of reptiles, one species of amphibians and representatives of six animal classes. Of these, the following are included in the Red Book of Uzbekistan: 9 mammal species, 9 bird species, 2 reptile species, 2 fish species and 6 invertebrate species.
