It was noted that Uzbekistan actively supports global efforts to combat plastic pollution, mobilize resources, conserve natural wealth, and ensure environmental security for future generations.
As part of the official programme and on the margins of INC-5.2, the Uzbek delegation held a series of meetings with representatives of participating countries and international development partners, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and other organizations.
The discussions covered prospects for expanding cooperation, attracting investment, sharing best practices in waste management, developing the green economy and deploying innovative plastic-recycling technologies. The parties confirmed their readiness to strengthen partnerships and work together on the future agreement, which will be an important instrument in the global fight against plastic pollution.
In addition, international partners were invited to the upcoming global events in Samarkand—the 20th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES (CITES CoP20) and the 8th Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
During the meetings, the parties discussed a number of issues:
– regulation of harmful chemicals contained in plastics;
– measures to eliminate accumulated plastic pollution;
– a just transition for workers in the industry;
– mechanisms for financing, technical assistance and technology transfer.
Uzbekistan’s participation in INC-5.2 reaffirms its commitment to international environmental cooperation. The delegation’s proactive stance and the contacts established lay the groundwork for the country’s further engagement in global environmental processes and for building a cleaner, safer future.
