The Tien-Shan brown bear is a vulnerable subspecies listed in Uzbekistan’s Red Book. Its range is patchily distributed across the Western Tien-Shan and the western Pamir-Alay. The species is active from March through October, primarily during the early morning and evening, and spends the winter in a den. The mating season occurs in May–June and cubs (usually one to three) are born every two years in January–February. Young cubs leave the den in March–April and reach sexual maturity at three to four years of age. Their diet includes fruits and bulbs and, to a lesser extent, mammals, insects, and carrion. They can live up to 30 years.
For reference: the “Yukori-Tupalang” National Natural Park was established on 4 March 2022 in Sariosiy (Saryosiy) District of Surkhandarya Region. The park is home to 46 species of fauna, 20 of which are listed in Uzbekistan’s Red Book.
