First Half of 2025: Uzbekistan Accelerates Environmental Reforms

The Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, in order to implement the tasks set out in the Program and to improve the environmental situation, carried out a number of significant activities during the first six months of the year. In particular, 18 draft regulatory legal acts aimed at environmental protection were prepared and submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers.
During the spring planting season, 137 million saplings were planted under the nationwide “Green Space” project. In addition, 13.8 million saplings were distributed, including 808,000 to 1,024 mahallas (neighborhoods) classified as “heavy,” 411,000 to schools and educational institutions and 611,000 to healthcare facilities. Furthermore, 6.1 million tree saplings were planted to establish green belts. A list of 570 “green gardens” and “green public parks” has been compiled for public voting. Under the Open Budget program, 174 projects were selected as winners. Through the "Green Space" platform, 337,260 trees in Tashkent have been registered with individual tree passports. To produce saplings adapted to local soil and climatic conditions, nurseries and seedling grounds covering 1,300 hectares have been established, where 123 million saplings and seedlings are being grown.
A total of 130,000 hectares of forest have been created and restored nationwide. In the Aral Sea region, 126,200 hectares of forest were planted. 746 tones of tree and shrub seeds were collected to support planting activities and forestry operations. In 14 districts characterized by mountainous and hilly terrain, terraced forest plantations covering 41 hectares were established.
In addition, at 44 industrial enterprises with environmental impact, 47 dust-and-gas emission control units were modernized and two new high-efficiency purification units were installed at two enterprises. A register of 74 Category I and II enterprises where local wastewater treatment facilities are planned to be built or reconstructed has been compiled. Local wastewater treatment facilities were constructed or reconstructed at 18 enterprises. Seven automatic air quality monitoring stations were installed across six districts of Tashkent.
At the same time, a total of 976 hectares of land disturbed by mineral extraction were reclaimed. 27 municipal solid waste landfills were rehabilitated and decommissioned. Works on the construction, reconstruction and repair of 56 household waste collection points were carried out.
