Environmental protection — particularly waste management — remains one of the most pressing ecological challenges today. In this regard, Uzbekistan is carrying out large-scale efforts to develop an efficient, modern system for the collection and processing of municipal solid waste, along with the closure and rehabilitation of existing landfills.
The landfill in Bakhmal District covered an area of 2.9 hectares. On average, 45–50 tonnes of waste generated by residents, businesses, and institutions were brought to the site daily, reaching 1,300–1,350 tonnes per month. In total, 134,897.5 tonnes of municipal solid waste had accumulated at the site.
As part of the rehabilitation process, the landfill was covered with a 55–60 cm layer of soil. This measure has eliminated adverse impacts on public health and the environment and has improved the overall ecological condition of the area. It also helps prevent the spread of unpleasant odors, fires, and airborne waste, while transforming former dumpsites into modern sanitary landfills that pose no threat to nature or human well-being.
Currently, municipal solid waste generated in Bakhmal District is transported to and disposed of at a landfill located in Gallaorol District.
