On the night of November 6–7, 2024, during a routine night-time raid conducted by the Tashkent Regional Department of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change in cooperation with the regional prosecutor’s office and law enforcement agencies, illegal sand and gravel extraction was discovered within a protected area of the Chirchiq River.
The investigation confirmed that the extracted materials were transported to a crushing facility owned by “G.S.” LLC. Ecological inspectors calculated that the damage caused to the environment was significant and the case materials were subsequently submitted to law enforcement authorities for legal action.
As a result, the Akqorgon District Criminal Court found S.I. guilty under the applicable articles of the Criminal Code and sentenced him to six years of imprisonment to be served in accordance with established procedures. The court also ruled to recover substantial damages from the offender in favor of the state.
It is important to note that, as of May 1, 2024, a permanent moratorium has been introduced on the extraction of non-metallic materials from the beds of several water bodies, including the Chirchiq River. The Ministry of Ecology urges strict compliance with the moratorium and reminds all parties that violations of environmental law will result in legal consequences as prescribed by legislation.
