This year has been declared in Uzbekistan as the “Year of Environmental Protection and Green Economy”, marking a key phase in the implementation of the national “Uzbekistan–2030” Strategy. This strategic document outlines the country’s long-term commitment to sustainable development, environmental safety, green growth and improved quality of life. The Ministry has been entrusted with critical tasks to ensure environmental resilience and to implement green transformation mechanisms. All objectives set for the first half of the year have been fully achieved, covering regulatory development, practical initiatives and target indicator attainment.
In spring 2025, under the national “Yashil Makon” (Green Space) project, 137 million trees and shrubs were planted across the country and 55 new "green parks" were established—a significant increase compared to the same period last year. Under the “My Garden” initiative, which allows public voting via the “Open Budget” portal, 174 projects were selected with a total value of 43.5 billion sums. Biodiversity conservation efforts included the release of 2,426 great bustards into the wild—three times more than the previous year—and the establishment of medicinal plant plantations covering 5,669 hectares. Additionally, 349,000 trees were catalogued and entered into the electronic “Yashil Makon” platform.
Since the beginning of the year, ministry inspectors have identified over 23,000 violations of environmental laws and conducted more than 40,000 preventive measures among businesses and individuals. Environmental monitoring of air, water and soil quality has been carried out at 228 sites, including new automated stations installed in 10 districts of Karakalpakstan with UNDP support. Progressive pollution-control technologies have been deployed in 46 industrial facilities, and 18 sites have installed local wastewater treatment systems. As part of the “Toza Havo” (Clean Air) campaign, over 250,000 vehicles were inspected, preventing the emission of 36.3 tons of pollutants. Water conservation improved as 1,164 car washes were equipped with treatment systems, resulting in a 60% treatment rate for car wash wastewater.
Environmental expertise continues to progress successfully, with over 26,000 environmental impact assessments (EIAs) issued—more than double last year’s figures. Over 800 public hearings were held on projects of Category I and II environmental impact.
The presidential Concept for Environmental Awareness Raising Until 2030 was approved and serves as the key framework for raising ecological consciousness. Scientific and practical projects at Green University have been implemented, with their results applied in practice. Additionally, around 100 staff members from high-impact enterprises have undergone environmental training.
In waste management, the Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development has integrated its billing system with major electronic platforms and wrote off 66.3 billion sums in outstanding fees for unprovided services. Services now cover over 7.2 million subscribers, serving 23.6 million residents. Public-private partnerships continue to expand, with 64 agreements signed with 50 private companies, resulting in 346.8 billion sums in investments, waste collection and recycling infrastructure, and equipment procurement. The Agency has also acquired 55 vehicles and 20 containers.
In the investment sector, 10 projects worth $1.83 billion are underway—of which $1.27 billion are new initiatives. $78.7 million in foreign investment was attracted in the first half of the year, representing 102% of the target. This includes $52.8 million in FDI and $25.9 million in state-guaranteed loans.
Significant progress has been made in hydrometeorology: 7 automated monitoring stations installed, over 180 forecasts issued, including urgent weather and hydrological alerts; 11 avalanche warnings were issued for mountain regions, and 124 environmental pollution reports were released.
In forestry, extensive afforestation activities were conducted over 130,000 hectares, including 126,200 ha on the former Aral Sea bed. 746 tones of seeds were collected, 1,300 ha of nurseries established and 123 million seedlings grown. Plantations of medicinal and food plants now cover 5,890 ha, producing 253 tones of yield. Land stabilization measures include afforestation over 701 ha and terracing on 41 ha. A total of 31,000 ha of forest land has been leased—4,505 ha on preferential terms for needy families. As part of adopting advanced practices from China, 30,000 paper mulberry saplings were imported and planted on 88 ha.
These achievements are the result of a comprehensive and consistent approach to environmental sustainability and nature conservation in Uzbekistan, reinforcing the country’s commitment to green development and fulfilling national and international environmental obligations.
