The long-legged buzzard is one of the most widespread birds of prey from the hawk family in Central Asia. Its wingspan reaches 1.2 to 1.4 meters. The plumage varies in color—from brown and dark chestnut to yellowish tones. In flight, it is easily recognized by its pale-colored wings. It inhabits steppe, semi-desert and desert areas and leads a largely sedentary lifestyle. In Uzbekistan, it can be found in mountainous and foothill regions, on plains, and even on cultivated lands.
It nests on cliffs, in ravines, in trees, or directly on the ground. Between late March and April, it lays eggs and raises between 2 to 5 chicks per clutch. Its diet includes marmots, gerbils and other rodents, as well as hedgehogs, small birds, turtles, lizards and snakes.
For Reference: The "Aktag-Tamdi" State Nature Reserve was established in February 2022 in the Tamdi District of the Navoi Region. It is home to 14 species of mammals, 22 species of birds and 7 species of reptiles. Sixteen of these species are listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan.
