The trainings were held as part of the project "Assessing the Impact of Food Systems on Land Use and Restoration in Uzbekistan" (GCP/UZB/010/GFF), by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, with support from experts of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The main objective of the training sessions was to build the capacity of both local communities and reserve specialists in sustainable natural resource management, biodiversity conservation and land degradation prevention. The training was delivered in an interactive format and covered a wide range of topics, including income generation without harming the environment, creating value chains, restoring eroded soils, protecting natural ecosystems, reducing human-wildlife conflict, promoting gender equality and applying Nature-based Solutions (NbS) as well as ecosystem restoration assessment methodologies (ROAM).
Special attention was given to promising areas of horticulture and the importance of diversifying agricultural crops.
In total, more than 130 participants, including reserve inspectors and community representatives, took part in the trainings. During the sessions, they received practical guidance on land restoration based on the level of degradation, as well as strategies to address environmental and human-induced challenges in the region.
According to the organizers, such trainings play an important role in strengthening collaboration between conservation authorities and communities living in the buffer zones, improving the well-being of local residents and reducing tensions in human-wildlife interactions.
