Rare saigas of Aralkum

The saiga or saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan and classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In Uzbekistan, saigas are found on the Ustyurt Plateau in Karakalpakstan, in the eastern and southern parts of the Aral Sea region, and on the former seabed of the Aral Sea. Historically, their range included the northern Kyzylkum Desert, the Syrdarya River floodplain, and the lowland areas of the Fergana Valley. As of 2016, the total size of the transboundary Ustyurt population was estimated at around 1,900 individuals, while the resident groups in the Aral Sea region and on the former seabed numbered approximately 200 individuals.
For reference: Aralkum National Nature Park was established on March 4, 2022, in the Muynak District of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The park is home to 25 animal species, four of which are listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan.
