Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Aziz Abdukhakimov stated:
"Climate-sensitive urban development is not only about environmental protection – its also about economic resilience, social well-being and public health. The initiative will cover cities in the Fergana Valley, where rapid urbanisation calls for urgent and sustainable solutions."
The minister also emphasized that the project fully aligns with the agenda of “Eco Expo”, which focuses on international cooperation, innovation, and shaping a shared vision for a sustainable future.
During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan and GIZ. The document outlines areas of cooperation in environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and the sustainable use of natural resources.
According to the memorandum, the parties agreed to coordinate efforts to fulfill Uzbekistan’s international environmental commitments, support the development of strategic documents, and facilitate access to global climate finance. One key objective will be implementing pilot solutions in cities across the Fergana Valley—including Fergana, Namangan, Andijan, Margilan, and Kokand—with active engagement from local authorities, communities, and businesses.
The project will form part of the German government's broader “Green Central Asia” initiative, ensuring a coordinated regional approach and the application of leading international practices.
