The Turkestan lynx is a vulnerable species with a declining and fragmented population. It is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan and included in Appendix II of the CITES Convention. The species inhabits the mountain systems of the Western Tien Shan (Ugam, Pskem, Chatkal, and formerly the Kurama and Fergana ranges), as well as the Pamir-Alay. It prefers mid- to high-altitude mountain regions, especially areas near cliffs and rocky slopes.
The birthing season for lynxes typically occurs between May and June. Young lynxes reach sexual maturity at the age of 2 to 3 years. In the event of food shortages following the breeding season, they may migrate to other areas. Their diet mainly consists of hares. Lynxes can live up to 17 years.
For reference: The Surkhan State Nature Reserve was established on September 8, 1986, in the Sherabad district of the Surkhandarya region. It is home to about 200 animal species, 25 of which are listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan.
