Environmental project for safe battery disposal launched in Uzbekistan

The project addresses one of the most pressing environmental challenges — the safe collection and disposal of used batteries, which are classified as hazardous waste. Due to the presence of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, nickel, and lithium, improper battery disposal poses a serious threat to both the environment and human health.
As part of this initiative, 100 specialized battery collection containers have been installed across the country. The exact locations of these collection points are listed on the platform www.batareykalar.uz, making it easy for every citizen to find the nearest drop-off location.
In the regions, 28 collection points are currently operating, each with two designated locations — within the regional offices of the Ministry of Ecology and at Korzinka supermarket branches. In Tashkent, there are 72 collection points, half of which are located in Korzinka supermarkets, while the others are situated in government institutions and educational facilities.
Although Uzbekistan currently lacks a dedicated battery recycling plant, the project is being implemented as an independent environmental initiative, strictly adhering to all environmental safety standards. All collected batteries are temporarily stored under safe conditions and subsequently disposed of by the No Waste company in compliance with international regulations.
The project operates without a system of material incentives for the population, instead placing a strong emphasis on fostering environmental awareness and responsible waste disposal behavior among citizens. Project partners include the Ministry of Ecology, Korzinka supermarket chain, Murad Buildings, and the Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development.
The www.batareykalar.uz initiative represents a significant step toward building an effective waste management system in Uzbekistan and enhancing the level of environmental responsibility within society.
