During the talks, it was noted that since Uzbekistan joined IUCN in 2021, cooperation has been progressing in a steady and constructive manner. Special attention was given to the opening of IUCN’s first office in Central Asia — located in Uzbekistan. The Prime Minister emphasized that the decision to host the office on the campus of the Central Asian University of Environmental and Climate Change Studies (Green University) was made with the goal of fostering strong collaboration with the scientific community and engaging students, young scientists and researchers in IUCN’s work.
Confidence was expressed that the IUCN regional office will serve as an effective platform for implementing joint nature conservation initiatives, adopting international standards in the cataloguing of Uzbekistan’s unique flora and fauna, and supporting the country’s protected areas in obtaining the prestigious “International Green” certification.
In response, Grethel Aguilar extended her sincere gratitude to Uzbekistan for its support in establishing the IUCN Central Asia Office, describing the decision as both strategic and mutually beneficial.
“Since joining IUCN, Uzbekistan has made significant progress in environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, climate action, and strengthening international cooperation — efforts that deserve special recognition. We see Uzbekistan as a key gateway to expand our operations across the region,” emphasized the IUCN Director General.
Ms. Aguilar also noted that, amid the country’s proactive foreign policy and ongoing reforms under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Uzbekistan is becoming an increasingly important partner for IUCN. According to her, the new office will play a pivotal role not only in implementing projects within Uzbekistan, but also in promoting regional initiatives. Particular focus will be placed on the practical training of specialists, knowledge exchange and internship opportunities for young professionals and staff of environmental agencies.
The two sides agreed to jointly develop projects on biodiversity conservation, nature-based solutions, and flora and fauna cadastre systems. They also discussed cooperation with Green University and participation in major international events to be held in Uzbekistan.
