During the meeting, Ms. Duarte expressed her gratitude to the Government of Uzbekistan for the warm welcome and the organization of a familiarization visit to the Aral Sea region. She highlighted the importance of the projects and reforms presented in the areas of environmental protection and climate change adaptation. Ms. Duarte also emphasized the significance of sustainable agriculture, efficient water use, and the crucial role of farmers in the development of the Aral Sea region.
In turn, A. Abdukhakimov spoke about Uzbekistan’s “green” initiatives being implemented under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, including the afforestation of two million hectares of the dried seabed of the Aral Sea and the nationwide “Yashil Makon” (Green Space) project, which involves planting 200 million tree seedlings annually across the country.
The meeting also covered Uzbekistan’s ongoing projects in the field of green development. Of particular interest was the initiative to establish a GCF Regional Office for Central Asia, with Uzbekistan being considered as a potential host country.
The two sides also expressed keen interest in launching an ecotourism development project in the Aral Sea region. This includes the establishment of a Climate Museum in Karakalpakstan and support for biodiversity conservation programs.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties expressed mutual interest in strengthening cooperation, agreed to exchange expert insights on promising initiatives, and voiced hope for continued constructive and results-oriented collaboration.
