May 20 — World Bee Day

Various factors — including invasive insect species, toxic chemicals (such as pesticides), land-use changes, climate change, and environmental pollution — are putting bees at risk of extinction. In response, the United Nations General Assembly established World Bee Day in 2017 to raise awareness about the importance of bees, the threats they face, and their contribution to sustainable development.
Why May 20? Because on this day in 1734, Anton Janša — the pioneer of modern beekeeping — was born. In 1771, he published a treatise on bees that was reprinted many times. Today, his advice and innovations are still used by beekeepers around the world.
Bees play a vital role in the reproduction of many plants, including food crops. These insects are involved in pollinating over 75% of agricultural crops, helping to increase yields, improve the quality and variety of produce, preserve biodiversity, maintain soil fertility, purify air and water, and enhance natural pest control.
