The snow leopard is a critically endangered and locally distributed species, listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan, the IUCN Red List and included in both the CITES and the Convention on Biological Diversity. According to expert estimates, only 2,700 to 3,400 individuals remain in the wild, with 57–59 residing specifically within the Hisar State Nature Reserve.
A twilight predator, the snow leopard spends the day hiding in caves and among rocky outcrops, becoming active primarily in the evening hours. Females give birth once every two years, most often in June. In search of prey, the snow leopard roams across mountainous terrain, following herds of wild ungulates. It can live up to 21 years.
For reference: The Hisar State Nature Reserve was established in 1983 and is located in the southern part of the Hisar Range, in the Kashkadarya region, at elevations ranging from 1,750 to 4,349 meters above sea level. It borders the Surkhandarya region to the southeast and Tajikistan to the north. The reserve is home to 276 species of vertebrates and invertebrates, eight of which are listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan.
