The steppe tortoise, also known as the Central Asian Tortoise, is an endemic and declining species. It is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and Appendix II of CITES. In Uzbekistan, it is widespread across all lowland areas and can be found at elevations up to 1,300 meters above sea level in mountainous regions.
In June, the steppe tortoise enters summer dormancy, which later transitions into winter hibernation. Awakening occurs in March. Between April and June, females lay eggs two to three times, with each clutch containing two to six eggs. After 80 to 110 days, hatchlings emerge but remain underground to overwinter, surfacing only the following spring. Their diet mainly consists of ephemeral plants, perennial herbs and shrubs.
For reference: "Aralkum" National Nature Park was established on March 4, 2022, in the Muynak district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The park is home to 25 species of animals, four of which are included in the Red Book of Uzbekistan.
