An international forum dedicated to March 21 – International Day of Forests was held at the Central Asian University of Environmental and Climate Change Studies (Green University).

The forum was attended by Minister of Ecology, environmental protection and climate change Aziz Abdukhakimov, director of the Forestry Agency Erkin Mukhitdinov, Chairman of the Committee on Ecology and Environmental Protection of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis Khayrilla Gapporov, as well as industry experts, international specialists and media representatives.

In his opening speech, Minister Aziz Abdukhakimov highlighted the importance of forests and the large-scale afforestation efforts being carried out in the country. He emphasized that the expansion and restoration of forested areas have never been more critical.

"Forests play a crucial role in ensuring environmental security, maintaining ecological balance and preserving biodiversity. They also play a key role in mitigating the effects of climate change, purifying air and water, and improving the living conditions of millions of people worldwide," said A. Abdukhakimov. "Unfortunately, the global forest area is shrinking, leading to severe ecological consequences. This urges humanity to take urgent action in preserving existing forests, increasing greenery, and working together on this issue. We must always remember that protecting forests remains our ongoing responsibility," the minister added.

He also expressed gratitude to forestry workers, congratulated them on the occasion and wished them continued success in their vital work.

Director of the Forestry Agency Erkin Mukhitdinov acknowledged the significant contribution of forestry professionals, particularly their efforts to combat desertification and create protective forests. During the event, a group of long-serving forestry workers was awarded the "O'rmon Fidoyisi" (Devoted Forester) badge in recognition of their dedication.

The forum also presented medicinal and other products grown by foresters, as well as a skit “A tree planted by my father” aimed at preserving trees. Following the forum, guests were given a guided tour of Green University.

The total forest land area in Uzbekistan is 12.1 million hectares, accounting for 26% of the country’s total land area. Of this, 10.2 million hectares (84%) are deserts, 1.64 million hectares (13%) are mountainous regions, and 260,000 hectares (3%) consist of groves and valleys. In 2024, forest coverage in Uzbekistan increased to 3.65 million hectares, raising the country’s forestation rate to 8.1%. To improve environmental stability, 220,000 hectares of forest restoration work was completed.

As part of efforts to prevent sand migration, salt emissions, and dust pollution in the Aral Sea Basin and surrounding areas, "green belts" were created on 215,000 hectares of land. This included 112,500 hectares in Muynak District of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, 41,000 hectares in Alat District of Bukhara Region, 51,300 hectares in Tamdy and Uchkuduk Districts of Navoi Region, and 10,000 hectares in Tuprakkala District of Khorezm Region.

Additionally, 1,300 hectares of nurseries were established across all forestry enterprises to produce seedlings adapted to local soil and climate conditions, resulting in the cultivation of 127 million seedlings. Furthermore, 2,500 hectares of protective forests and 347 hectares of "green parks" were created in 134 cities and districts to prevent land erosion and degradation in desert and foothill regions.

Uzbekistan’s commitment to expanding forested areas and promoting sustainable forestry practices remains a key priority in the country’s environmental strategy.
