Unveils cooperation roadmap for Ustyurt biodiversity conservation

The meeting was organized by the regional project "Ecologically oriented regional development of the Aral Sea region", implemented by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), in partnership with the Committee of Forestry and Wildlife of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the CMS Secretariat, the Michael Succow Foundation, the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK), and the GIZ Regional Program "Integrative and Climate-sensitive Land Use in Central Asia".
During the event, participants presented reports on the current state of biodiversity on the Ustyurt Plateau, existing threats, and future conservation prospects. The discussions focused on several key issues:
• Enhancing cross-border cooperation to create wildlife corridors in border fences and linear infrastructure, ensuring safe migration for wild animals.
• Developing response mechanisms to mitigate the negative impact of renewable energy projects, oil and gas operations, and mining activities on biodiversity.
• Reviewing the achievements of international and non-governmental organizations in biodiversity conservation and exploring funding opportunities for new initiatives.
The main outcome of the meeting was the joint adoption of the “Roadmap of actions within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of wildlife conservation of the Ustyurt Plateau (2025-2030)”. This strategic document includes: 7 key areas of work, 12 objectives with clear indicators of achievement, deadlines for implementation and a list of responsible executors.
The meeting confirmed the readiness of the countries for active cooperation in the field of Ustyurt biodiversity conservation and effective fulfillment of the set tasks.
