The discussion brought together representatives from the Ministry of Ecology, the Hydrometeorological Service Agency, the Ministry of Health, the "Zamin" International Public Foundation, UNEP, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the World Health Organization (WHO), environmental experts, and other stakeholders.
During the videoconference, it was emphasized that air quality, climate change, and environmental sustainability are increasingly becoming global priorities. High concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), rising transport emissions, and transboundary pollution are worsening environmental conditions, especially in arid regions with intensive industrial development.
Gulnara Khojabekova, Head of the Air Protection Department at the Ministry of Ecology, highlighted that the geographical and climatic characteristics of Termez contribute to the accumulation of pollutants. In response, Uzbekistan is actively reforming its air pollution monitoring and emission control systems.
“As part of this project, we are deploying modern air quality monitoring methods, including automated stations, satellite data, and mobile laboratories. We are also analyzing climate factors such as the impact of dust storms and seasonal wind variations, implementing pollution forecasting models to effectively manage air quality and mitigate negative consequences. Additionally, recommendations are being developed for the industrial and transport sectors to reduce emissions and we are assessing the impact of air pollution on public health,” said Gulnara Khojabekova.
Furthermore, the conference organizers proposed additional measures to improve air quality in Uzbekistan’s cities, including the gradual phasing out of fuel oil in heating and energy supply, restricting the movement of heavy-duty transport, creating artificial reservoirs and irrigation systems, expanding urban green spaces, considering wind patterns and dust generation during construction projects and enhancing air quality monitoring systems.
At the conclusion of the event, participants emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and coordinated efforts to improve air quality in Uzbekistan.
