Waste recycling in Uzbekistan: a step towards a "Green" Economy

2025-03-01 10:00:00 / News

The Agency for Waste Management and Circular Economy Development under the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change, organized a press tour for media representatives. The purpose of the event was to familiarize them with the paper and cardboard recycling process at the "Profpack" enterprise.

In recent years, Uzbekistan has placed special emphasis on waste management. A significant milestone in this effort was the declaration of 2025 as the "Year of Environmental Protection and "Green" Economy." On the initiative of the country's leadership, legal acts are being developed to improve the waste management system and achieve the "zero waste" principle.

The Ministry of Ecology and the Waste Management Agency are implementing measures to accelerate waste recycling through sorting. Currently, Uzbekistan recycles the main types of household waste, including polyethylene, paper, glass, textiles, used technical oils, metals, car tires and rubber products. In 2024, the country generated 14.8 million tonnes of household waste, of which over 900,500 tonnes were processed at 292 specialized enterprises, accounting for 6.1 percent of the total.

Each year, 600,000 to 700,000 tonnes of paper waste are generated in Uzbekistan. The republic has 104 enterprises dedicated to processing this type of waste, which collectively handle 185,600 tonnes of paper and cardboard annually. This enables these materials to be returned to the economy as secondary raw materials.

The "Profpack" enterprise, located in the "Yangi Hayot" mahalla in the Sergeli district of Tashkent, processes around 2,500 tonnes of paper waste every month. The plant is capable of processing up to 100 tonnes of waste per day. The recycling process includes sorting, shredding, moistening, cleaning, pressing and drying, after which the finished product is produced.

Waste sorting is an essential step toward environmental protection. Let’s work together to promote recycling and the circular economy because the future of the planet is everyone’s responsibility!
