The saiga is listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, and Appendix II of CITES, with an endangered species status. Uzbekistan has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kazakhstan on the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of saigas, as well as an Intergovernmental Agreement on Saiga Conservation.
Since the 1990s, the saiga population has declined by 99.5%. The number of saigas migrating from northern Kazakhstan fluctuates annually, depending on weather conditions.
"Aralkum" National Nature Park was established on March 4, 2022, in the Muynak district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The region is home to 25 animal species, four of which are listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan. Saigas are among the most common species found in the Aral Sea region.
