Many countries around the world recycle glass to minimize its negative impact, helping to reduce waste, lessen environmental harm and optimize resource use.
In Uzbekistan, an estimated 408,000 tonnes of glass waste are generated annually, accounting for 4% of the total municipal solid waste (10.2 million tonnes).
For reference: In 2024, 37,300 tonnes of glass waste—9% of this type of waste—were recycled at 14 enterprises across the country.
Glass waste includes items such as bottles, jars, mirrors and other glass products. Since glass does not naturally decompose for over 1,000 years, it poses a significant environmental challenge. However, it is also one of the easiest materials to recycle due to its ability to be reused indefinitely without losing quality.
The Glass Recycling Process:
Separation: Waste glass is sorted from other types of waste.
Washing: Glass items are cleaned and prepared for recycling.
Mixing: The glass is blended with other raw materials, such as sand, for reuse.
Melting: The glass is melted and reshaped into new containers, building materials, or other products.
By expanding glass recycling efforts, Uzbekistan can further reduce waste pollution, conserve natural resources and promote a circular economy.
