Within the framework of the project of the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change, employees of the Scientific Research Institute of Forestry under the leadership of Doctor of Agricultural Sciences Zinovy Novitsky are conducting tests on the drained bottom of the Aral Sea to identify plant species most suitable for growing on saline soils.

Among the tested plant species are climacoptera, saltbushes, halostachys, tamarix, halocnemum, and kochia.

Special attention in the ongoing work is paid not only to the ability of plants to adapt to extreme conditions but also to their potential in restoring the biological functions of the ecosystem. Restoration of vegetation cover helps to stabilize the soil, reduce the level of dust storms, and improve microclimatic conditions in the region.

According to the results of the testing work, the plants most adapted to growth on saline lands will be identified and recommended for production. The data obtained will help to develop strategies to combat desertification and restore the ecosystem of the Aral region, which, in turn, will contribute to improving the quality of life of the local population.
