#BuyMoreTime: A global campaign to reduce methane emissions has been launched at COP29

According to the world's largest media platform for climate action, We Don't Have Time, 94 percent of the world's leading climate scientists believe that the goal of keeping global temperature rise below 1.5°C is no longer achievable.
"Despite the exponential growth of many climate solutions, decisive political action has lagged, slowing progress on emissions reduction. We are only just beginning to flatten the emissions curve when, in reality, we must halve emissions by 2030. This delay not only intensifies extreme weather events—storms, floods, droughts, and wildfires—but brings us dangerously close to tipping points that could trigger irreversible feedback loops, threatening human civilization as we know ",
the platform writes.
"But we can still do it — by rapidly reducing emissions of methane and other pollutants with a short life span",
she adds.
For reference: Methane is the biggest contributor to global warming among all short-lived climate pollutants. But it has a lifespan of only 7-12 years. This means that if you just stop throwing it out, the level of methane in the atmosphere will decrease rapidly, thereby reducing global warming by 0.5 °C. However, it is necessary to intensify joint efforts to phase out fossil fuels and accelerate the transition to a green economy in all countries. By drastically reducing methane and other super pollutants, more time can be gained to stabilize global temperatures as close as possible to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels.
158 countries as well as the European Union and 140 companies have already pledged to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030. And on November 19, during the UN COP29 climate conference, 30 countries, which account for almost 50% of global methane emissions from organic waste, approved a Declaration on reducing methane emissions from organic waste.
In this regard, the media platform "We Don't Have Time" and the Exponential Roadmap Initiative launched a global campaign #BuyMoreTime, which calls on business leaders, politicians, scientists, and individuals to sign a letter requesting the UN ambassadors from the undersigned countries to advocate for a new UN protocol for rapid reduction of methane emissions and other short-lived air pollutants.
”Methane emissions stem from only three major industry sources, and it is an unwanted waste product that will not affect anyone´s business if we take it away. Thanks to new technology, methane leaks can be identified from space with unprecedented accuracy. We have the solutions, we have the will. Now all we need are binding agreements to make it happen”
, says Ingmar Rentzhog, CEO and founder of We Don't Have Time.
As an example of joint successful actions, the platform cites the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, adopted in 1987. With the support of a special international fund and unprecedented public-private cooperation, the legally binding treaty proved to be a huge success: 99% of ozone-depleting substances have been eliminated, and the ozone layer is now being restored.
