The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is a global intergovernmental agreement for the conservation and wise use of all wetlands in the world. It was adopted by the Convention on Wetlands mission on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, Islamic Republic of Iran. The main principle of the convention is: "the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local, regional and national action and international cooperation as a contribution to the achievement of sustainable development worldwide". The Republic of Uzbekistan joined the Ramsar Convention in 2001. There are about ten water bodies on the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which are of great importance as gathering places for birds swimming in the water and living near water, and having reserves of large water bodies and animals living near water (the main water bodies are Dengizkol, Sudoche, Arnasoy, Todakol, Achinsk bays, Karakir).
