During the visit, the delegation familiarised itself with Russia’s experience in combating land degradation and desertification, restoring arid areas, implementing forest reclamation measures and promoting the sustainable use of pastures. In turn, Uzbekistan presented its ongoing efforts in the Aral Sea region to the international community.
The visit also included meetings with representatives of the Russian Federation and the leadership of the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Discussions focused on organising a dedicated event at the Uzbekistan Pavilion during COP31, supplying seeds for forest reclamation activities and implementing joint environmental initiatives involving young people.
One of the key outcomes of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Kalmyk State Research Institute of Agricultural Reclamation and the Research Institute for Combating Desertification and Developing the Desert Economy.
Following the visit, a number of proposals were also developed to advance agroecology in Uzbekistan, integrate approaches to the management of land, water, pasture, forest and livestock resources, introduce a science-based system of environmental and economic assessment, and implement a comprehensive pilot project in the Aral Sea region.
