The Board of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved the Climate-Resilient Landscapes in Central Asia (CLiCA) regional programme, with a total budget of €264.4 million. The programme was developed by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) in collaboration with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
Under the programme, Uzbekistan will receive €103.7 million. The funding will support forest and pasture restoration, the introduction of climate-resilient agricultural practices, and improved access for farmers to financial instruments needed to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Expected results in Uzbekistan include:
• 342,000 people becoming more resilient to climate risks, approximately half of whom are women;
•the adoption of climate-resilient management practices across 164,000 hectares of forests, pastures and agricultural land;
•a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and an increase in removals totalling 1.07 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.
The implementation of the CLiCA programme will enable Central Asian countries to strengthen their joint efforts to address shared environmental and climate challenges. Particular emphasis will be placed on conserving natural ecosystems, promoting sustainable land management and supporting local communities that are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
“This approval marks an important step towards more resilient communities and landscapes. Together with our partners in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, we aim to turn our shared goal into lasting results for the people and nature of Central Asia,” GIZ stated.
The CLiCA programme will provide an additional mechanism for advancing Uzbekistan’s climate priorities, including the restoration of degraded land, the sustainable use of natural resources and the development of climate-resilient agriculture.
