To this end, a specialised atmospheric laboratory centre was established under the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change by presidential decree. According to Zikrilla Alimov, Director of the Centre and Doctor of Technical Sciences, the Centre’s laboratory uses modern equipment and draws on leading international practices to investigate the sources of air pollutants. This work helps identify which factors contribute most significantly to air pollution.
Air samples are currently being collected using specialised filters in all districts of Tashkent and subsequently analysed in the laboratory. The research examines the sources of pollutants, their impact on air quality and the ways in which their dispersion is influenced by meteorological conditions. The experience gained is also expected to be introduced more widely across Uzbekistan.
Air quality is influenced not only by human activities but also by weather conditions. For example, prolonged periods without rainfall can lead to increased concentrations of airborne dust. During temperature inversions, the dispersion of pollutants in the near-surface layer of the atmosphere is restricted, causing them to accumulate.
This research is essential for identifying the underlying causes of air pollution, developing measures to prevent it and reducing its adverse effects. Improving air quality requires more than simply monitoring pollution: it is also necessary to identify its sources and implement scientifically sound solutions.
