The Ustyurt Plateau is located between the Mangyshlak Peninsula to the west and the Aral Sea in the Karabogaz Gulf and the Amudarya Delta to the east.
The total area of the Southern Ustyurt Natural Park is 1,447,143 hectares, with a protected area of 934,584 hectares, a recreational zone of 69,515 hectares, and an economic zone of 443,044 hectares.
Natural Conditions: The Asake-audan and Sarykamysh basins are located in the southeastern part of the plateau, connecting the depressions of Shordzhi and Shakhpakhty. There are ravines and coastal cliffs, with cliff heights ranging from 250 to 300 meters. The region has a sharply continental climate with dry cold winters and hot, arid summers. The Ustyurt Desert consists of gypsum, saline, and sandy formations, brown soils, gray-brown desert soils, as well as eroded gypsum soils, barren lands, and saline soils. The natural park includes the Sarykamysh and Kurukkul lakes, as well as the territories of Asake-Audan, Kaplankyr, and Kulantakyr.
Flora: More than 34 species of plants have been identified in the natural park.
Fauna: The Southern Ustyurt Natural Park is home to 131 species of vertebrates, including 20 species of mammals, 86 species of birds, 9 species of reptiles, aquatic, and terrestrial animals. One species of amphibian and 15 species of fish have been identified. Additionally, 36 species of rare wildlife are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Ecotourism: The National Natural Park is located in the southwestern part of the Republic and borders the Republics of Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. It is situated in the Kungirat district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The National Natural Park "Southern Ustyurt" includes the territory of Lake Sarykamysh.
