The "Nurata" State Reserve

The Nurata State Reserve is located in the central part of the Nurata mountain range, which is situated in the transitional zone between the Pamir-Alai and Tian-Shan mountain ranges and the Turan lowland. The Nurata mountains stretch for 200 km from the territory of the Turkestan range to the northwest, deeply penetrating into the Kyzylkum desert.
The reserve is situated at an altitude ranging from 500 to 2169 meters above sea level, within the territory of the Farish district of the Jizzakh region. It borders the Payarik and Koshrobata districts of the Samarkand region to the south and the Nurata district of the Navoi region to the west.
The total area of the reserve is 17,752.0 hectares, with a protective zone of 20,312.87 hectares. The "Nurata" State Reserve is located 100 km from the center of the Jizzakh region and 40 km from the center of the Farish district.
Natural conditions: The climate of the reserve is dry and hot, with the geological composition of the soil primarily consisting of Precambrian carbonaceous, graphite, and calcareous-siliceous shales.
Flora: In the Nurata State Reserve, 847 species of plants have been identified, including 32 species that are on the brink of extinction or listed in the Red Book.
Fauna: Within the reserve, 260 species of vertebrate animals have been recorded, including 35 species of mammals (such as the Lesser Horseshoe Bat, Corsac Fox, Marbled Polecat, Kyzylkum Mountain Sheep, Egyptian Fruit Bat, Crested Porcupine, Wild Boar, Wolf, etc.), over 200 species of birds, 21 species of reptiles, 3 species of amphibians, and a total of 864 species of invertebrates. 32 rare animal and bird species are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the IUCN Red List.
Ecotourism sites: Of particular importance in the reserve is the 2000-year-old Savur (Archa) or Eastern Biota tree, located 55 km from the center of the Farish district, in the upper part of the village of Mozhrum.
In addition, local and foreign guests are particularly interested in the Severtsov's Sheep (Ovis severtzovi), which are kept in a nursery (aviary) covering an area of 16 hectares, created for their conservation, breeding, and scientific study. The nursery is located 45 km from the Farish district, in the upper village of Khayot.
There are also guest houses for 20-30 people in the villages of Upper Ukhum, Asrof, and Porasht.
