National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan

As part of the event, the delegation held a meeting with Dr Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority of Oman. Shahboz Ahmedov, Director of the Climate Residency Programme at Green University, also took part in the meeting. The Uzbek side conveyed the sincere greetings of Aziz Abdukhakimov, Adviser to the President on Environmental Issues and Chairman of the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change, and expressed appreciation for the high level of organisation of Oman Climate Week.

During the meeting, it was noted that the two countries face a number of similar environmental challenges, including arid conditions, water scarcity, extreme heat and the need to decarbonise their economies. It was emphasised that the Oman Vision 2040 and the Uzbekistan–2030 Strategy are both seeking to address the same fundamental question: how to achieve economic growth while preserving natural resources.

The Uzbek side briefed the Omani delegation on reforms implemented in recent years, including strengthened environmental governance, the submission of Uzbekistan’s third nationally determined contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, commitments to reduce the carbon intensity of GDP by 50 per cent by 2035 compared with 2010 levels and achieve carbon neutrality by 2055, accession to the Global Methane Pledge, and the establishment in 2025 of a national system for carbon trading and mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The Uzbek side also highlighted the successful hosting of the Eighth Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in Samarkand in June 2026 and the establishment of the Tashkent International Financial Centre.

The Uzbek side expressed particular interest in Oman’s experience in water desalination, groundwater recharge and integrated water resources management, including the practice of using groundwater for irrigation in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate.

The parties discussed four priority areas of cooperation:
Water technologies — establishing a dialogue between Uzbek and Omani experts on desalination, the use of saline water, and the treatment and reuse of wastewater;
Salt-resilient agriculture and ecosystem restoration — involving Oman in the planned establishment in Uzbekistan of a Central Asian Centre for Salt-Resilient Agriculture and Climate Resilience;
Youth climate leadership — developing cooperation between Oman’s youth climate platforms and Green University’s Climate Residency Programme, including joint research and student exchanges;
Combating desertification — drawing on Oman’s experience in establishing a specialised centre in Uzbekistan with early-warning capabilities.

In addition, Oman was invited to participate in Eco Expo Central Asia 2027, which will be held in Tashkent on 15–17 June 2027. The exhibition will cover such areas as green finance, ecotourism, clean technologies, environmental education, afforestation, green transport and renewable energy.

The meeting also highlighted that the visit of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Oman would mark an important milestone in bilateral relations, while the signing of a memorandum of cooperation in the field of environmental protection would help elevate Uzbekistan–Oman cooperation to the level of practical joint projects.
