The yellow ground squirrel is one of the larger rodent species found in the desert and steppe ecosystems of Central Asia and is also native to Uzbekistan. It mainly inhabits deserts, semi-deserts, sandy steppes and dry plains. In Uzbekistan, the species has been recorded in a number of natural areas, including the southern regions of the country. It lives in underground burrows that it digs itself. In some areas, several individuals live in burrows close to one another, forming colonies.

The yellow ground squirrel is active during the day, with activity typically peaking in the morning and during cooler parts of the day. During hot weather, it spends more time inside its burrow. The species hibernates in winter, while summer dormancy may also occur under certain conditions. It is primarily herbivorous, feeding on seeds, stems, leaves and underground plant parts. Its yellowish or sandy-coloured coat helps it blend into its desert surroundings.

The yellow ground squirrel plays an important role in desert ecosystems. By digging burrows, it helps shape soil structure and contributes to the dispersal of plant seeds. It is also an important food source for birds of prey and predatory mammals, making it a significant part of the desert food chain. In the Aral Sea region, for example, the species has been recorded as prey for several birds of prey.

For reference: The Khorezm National Nature Park is located in the Urgench, Yangibozor, Khiva, Khanka and Tuproqqala districts of Khorezm Region. Established on 14 December 2019, the park is home to a variety of wildlife, including jackals, pheasants, wild ducks, ground squirrels, tolai hares, hooded crows and field sparrows.
