According to the"Waste Management and Circular Economy Development Agency", a natural ignition occurred at the “Mahsustrans” municipal solid waste landfill located in the Akhangaran district of the Tashkent region and operated under the authority of the Tashkent City Hokimiyat. The situation is currently under full control. The fire has been extinguished and reclamation and soil-covering works are being carried out at the landfill site.
According to specialists from the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change, the appearance of the burning smell in Tashkent was caused by changing weather conditions. Throughout the day, following the extinguishing of the open flames at the landfill, smoldering may have continued in certain areas of the waste site, resulting in the continued release of smoke and fine particulate matter into the atmosphere. Until the evening, there was almost no wind in the city; however, after approximately 7:00 p.m., the wind speed increased significantly and shifted to a south-easterly direction, carrying air masses from the landfill toward the capital.
During this period, air quality monitoring stations recorded an increase in concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀). Residents across various districts of the city reported the presence of a smoky odor and haze.
Therefore, according to preliminary data, the smell of burning detected in Tashkent was caused by the transport of smoke and fine aerosol particles from the landfill area toward the city by air currents resulting from a sudden change in wind direction and speed.
