The initiative is being implemented in accordance with the Presidential Decree of the Republic of Uzbekistan of 25 March 2026, "On measures to implement the nationwide "Clean Air" project aimed at improving air quality." Under the Decree, "Car-Free Day" and "Car-Free Week" campaigns are held on the 10th and 25th of each month.
The campaign is designed to reduce emissions from road transport, improve air quality, foster a healthier urban environment, and encourage greater use of public transport and other sustainable modes of mobility.
As part of the initiative, employees of the National Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Climate Change and its regional offices refrain from using both official and private vehicles during the campaign, choosing instead public transport, bicycles and other environmentally friendly means of travel.
Since the launch of the initiative, the use of more than 1,730 official and private vehicles by the Committee's employees and regional offices has been suspended during campaign days, resulting in an average reduction of approximately 17.4 tonnes of emissions. The initiative has also helped ease traffic congestion in urban areas.
Under the applicable legislation, the use of motor vehicles by public civil servants during "Car-Free Day" and "Car-Free Week" campaigns is subject to the legal requirements established for these initiatives.
The National Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Climate Change encourages all public institutions, private sector organizations and citizens to actively support the campaign by choosing public transport, electric vehicles, bicycles and other sustainable modes of transportation that contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment.
