The dialogue brought together representatives from more than 37 countries, including senior officials from relevant ministries and government agencies, representatives of United Nations entities, international experts, members of the scientific community, biodiversity finance specialists, and private sector representatives. Participants reviewed progress in mobilizing financial resources for biodiversity conservation and exchanged successful experiences in implementing innovative financing mechanisms in this field.
The primary objective of the event was to identify and promote effective approaches to financing environmental initiatives capable of scaling up biodiversity conservation efforts. Particular attention was given to the integration of environmental policy into national planning processes, the enhancement of financial instruments, and the mobilization of additional investment to support the implementation of conservation projects.
Participants emphasized that, as the international community approaches the midpoint of implementing the global biodiversity targets for 2030, the importance of integrated approaches that recognize the interlinkages between biodiversity conservation, climate change, and sustainable land management continues to grow. It was noted that investments in biodiversity conservation are essential for ensuring food and water security, strengthening resilience to climate change, and maintaining economic stability.
The opening ceremony was attended by Kadir Çokçetin, Director General of the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks of Türkiye; Monica Merino, UNDP Resident Representative in Türkiye; Martin Cadena, Global Manager of BIOFIN at UNDP; Steliana Nedera, Director of the UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub; Edgar Mkrtchyan, Deputy Minister of Finance of the Republic of Armenia; as well as other senior representatives of international organizations and government institutions.
Participants noted that the dialogue is taking place at a pivotal moment for the region, as 33 countries transition from the planning phase to the implementation of Biodiversity Finance Plans developed with BIOFIN support. These plans help identify financing needs for biodiversity conservation, assess public expenditures, evaluate the effectiveness of existing policies and institutions and develop practical financial solutions for mobilizing resources to protect biodiversity.
The participation of the Uzbek delegation in the dialogue marked another important step in strengthening international cooperation on environmental protection and advancing modern financing mechanisms aimed at achieving both national and global biodiversity conservation goals.
