During the event, UNEP Programme Manager Zhengzheng Qu presented the Nature-Based Solutions Innovation Accelerator (NBS-IA) initiative, which is implemented under the leadership of the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security in collaboration with UNEP and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
It was noted that the initiative aims to support the development and implementation of innovative Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to enhance the resilience of critical infrastructure in developing countries and emerging economies. Special attention during the event was given to the climate challenges confronting Central Asian nations—including droughts, floods, glacier melting, and desertification—which have a direct impact on the region's transport, water management, and energy infrastructure.
Participants discussed the potential of nature-based solutions rooted in utilizing the ecosystem functions of forests, wetlands, pastures, and other natural areas to mitigate climate risks, bolster infrastructure resilience, and conserve biodiversity. Throughout the discussions, attendees explored opportunities for synergy between the NBS-IA initiative and existing regional programs and strategies, as well as the prospects for attracting investments and expanding cooperation in the field of nature-based solutions across Central Asia.
Particular focus was placed on the preparation of pilot projects, criteria for selecting initiatives, application mechanisms, and the development of regional partnerships to scale up successful environmental practices.
Ultimately, the side event served as a vital platform for strengthening the dialogue between government agencies, international financial institutions, the scientific community, and civil society in the realm of sustainable infrastructure and climate adaptation.
