During the meeting, the parties discussed priority areas of regional environmental cooperation and the further strengthening of their partnership with UNEP. It was noted that in recent years, issues of environmental protection and the climate agenda in Central Asia have received unprecedented attention at the level of the region's heads of state. This was evidenced by the 2025 Samarkand Climate Forum and the Regional Environmental Summit held in Astana.
One of the key topics of the negotiations was the initiative to improve air quality and develop the Interstate Clean Air Coalition. Participants discussed the joint development, alongside UNEP, of a regional project aimed at mitigating the impact of sand and dust storms on public health and the ecology of Central Asian cities. It was noted that, moving forward, the initiative could be expanded into a comprehensive regional program encompassing air quality monitoring and forecasting systems, environmental data exchange, and the coordination of measures to reduce transboundary pollution.
Special attention was given to the initiative of creating a Regional Atlas of Environmental Changes in Central Asia. Uzbekistan presented its experience in developing the National Environmental Atlas, which was launched with UNEP's support in 2025. Building on this foundation, it was proposed to establish a unified regional atlas that would consolidate the environmental data of the region's countries and provide a comprehensive assessment of environmental trends in Central Asia.
The meeting also addressed the positioning of Central Asian countries within the framework of the Montreal Protocol, as well as the region's institutional representation within the UN and UNEP systems. The parties emphasized the importance of strengthening Central Asia's role in international environmental processes and the need to more fully account for the contemporary needs of the countries in the region.
The participants reaffirmed their strong interest in further consolidating cooperation with UNEP to advance sustainable development, environmental resilience, and climate security across Central Asia.
