Officially adopted by the UNECE Committee on Environmental Policy in November 2025, the Fourth Review has emerged as a crucial international document reflecting Uzbekistan's progress in environmental reforms, climate policy, and sustainable development.
Deputy Minister of Ecology Jusipbek Kazbekov delivered welcoming remarks to the participants, underscoring the consistency of the country's ongoing environmental reforms and the critical importance of international cooperation in driving the "green" transformation. The event also featured addresses by Paola Deda, Director of the Environment and Forestry Division at UNECE; Sabine Machl, UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan; government representatives from Germany, Italy, and Switzerland; as well as international experts who participated in drafting the review.
During the presentation of the Fourth Review's key findings, the primary outcomes of the assessment regarding Uzbekistan's environmental policy and reforms were outlined. It was noted that the review acknowledges the country's significant progress in environmental governance. This includes the establishment of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change under the Administration of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the development of environmental monitoring systems, the implementation of the Yashil Makon (Green Nation) initiative, the advancement of renewable energy projects, and the reinforcement of biodiversity conservation measures.
According to the review, Uzbekistan has implemented, partially implemented, or is currently in the process of implementing 77% of the recommendations outlined in the Third Environmental Performance Review. The newly published review presents 45 recommendations and covers 41 specific targets across 12 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Special attention during the event was devoted to the nation's future environmental policy priorities, which include advancing climate action, integrating nature-based solutions, enhancing environmental governance, and formulating a roadmap to implement the review's recommendations for the 2026–2030 period.
The event culminated in a symbolic handover ceremony of Uzbekistan's Fourth Environmental Performance Review. Participants emphasized the imperative of further strengthening international partnerships, raising public awareness, and collaboratively advancing environmental sustainability across the region.
Ultimately, the side event served as a vital platform for presenting Uzbekistan's achievements in environmental protection and discussing the subsequent steps required to fulfill the national environmental and climate agenda.
