Eighth Global Environment Facility Assembly Opens in Samarkand

The ceremony marked the official opening of one of the world’s largest international environmental gatherings, bringing together representatives of governments, international organizations, financial institutions and environmental experts from across the globe.
Following the ceremony, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Secretariat of the Global Environment Facility and the National Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Climate Change.
The memorandum is aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and provides opportunities for internships and professional exchange programmes for employees of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change within the GEF Secretariat.
Under the memorandum, the parties also agreed to expand cooperation in the areas of climate change, biodiversity conservation, combating land degradation, chemicals and waste management, and strengthening institutional linkages between international and national environmental institutions.
The hosting of the Eighth GEF Assembly in Uzbekistan underscores the country’s growing role in advancing the global environmental agenda and fostering international cooperation for sustainable development.
