This year, the environmental initiative celebrates its 20th anniversary. Exactly two decades ago, Saiga Day was first introduced in schools across the Ustyurt region through the initiative of a group of dedicated scientists from the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences, the NGO Ekomaktab, and with the support of the international organization Saiga Conservation Alliance. Over the years, the celebration has gained popularity not only in Karakalpakstan, but also in other saiga range states, including Kazakhstan, Kalmykia and Mongolia.
Traditionally, "Saiga Day" features open environmental lessons in schools, conservation campaigns, sporting competitions for the “Saiga Cup” — including marathons, cycling races, football, volleyball and basketball matches — as well as educational eco-quests. Each community develops its own programme of activities based on local initiatives and the interests of young people.
The event brought together school students from Nukus, Muynak, and the settlements of Jaslyk, Karakalpakstan and Kyrykkyz in the Kungrad district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, where children’s and youth environmental clubs known as “Friends of the Saiga” operate. Teachers and mentors of these clubs serve as environmental leaders, inspiring children and young people to participate in conservation initiatives, neighbourhood improvement projects, and efforts to protect local flora and fauna. Through practical activities, the younger generation develops environmental awareness and a responsible attitude toward nature.
The youth environmental festival was organized with the support of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, staff of protected natural areas in Karakalpakstan, the international organization Saiga Conservation Alliance, volunteers from the NGO "Ekomaktab" and experts from the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
It was noted that such events help foster a careful and respectful attitude toward nature, raise environmental awareness among the population and instil in young people a sense of appreciation for their native land.
It is important to emphasize that "Saiga Day" and all related activities are conducted within the framework of commitments under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Memorandum of Understanding concerning Conservation, Restoration and Sustainable Use of the Saiga Antelope. The initiative is also implemented in accordance with Presidential Resolution No. 171 of the Republic of Uzbekistan, dated 31 May 2023, which established the regular observance of the environmental event "Saiga Day".
The activities are aimed at strengthening environmental education and conservation efforts among children, youth, and residents of communities located near the saiga’s habitat. The saiga is an endangered species listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
