20 May – World Bee Day

World Bee Day has been observed since 2018, following the decision of the United Nations to designate 20 May as an international observance. The date was chosen in honor of the birthday of Anton Janša, one of the pioneers of modern beekeeping, who came from a family with centuries-old beekeeping traditions in Slovenia.
The theme for 2026 is “Together for People and Planet.” It reflects the centuries-long relationship between humans and bees, the importance of beekeeping across different cultures and regions and the idea of ensuring a sustainable future through the integration of modern and traditional knowledge.
Bees play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. These insects provide pollination for plants, contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and represent an essential component of environmental sustainability.
World Bee Day calls on each of us not to remain indifferent to nature, to protect pollinators and to work together in the interest of environmental sustainability.
