The project, titled “Development of Regional Cooperation in the Assessment of Nival-Glacial Systems and Integrated Approaches to Climate Change Adaptation to Strengthen the Resilience of Central Asian Countries,” brings together five countries of the region: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
The initiative is being implemented with the support of the Global Environment Facility, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNESCO and covers five key areas:
–establishment of a unified database on glaciers, snow cover and permafrost;
–development of national and regional action plans;
–introduction of advanced cryosphere monitoring methods;
–pilot testing of innovative water resource management technologies;
–raising public and institutional awareness of climate-related risks.
The involvement of the Hydrometeorological Research Institute further enhances Uzbekistan’s scientific contribution to the project. The Institute will play an active role in implementation alongside more than 30 national partners, including research institutions, ministries and government agencies.
Experts note that glaciers across Central Asia have been rapidly retreating in recent decades, creating serious challenges for regional water security, agriculture and ecosystems. The scientific assessments and recommendations developed under the project are expected to provide a solid foundation for shaping national climate adaptation policies across the region.
